4 cyl t-5 onto a 302!!
ok I know that all of you are gonna say the 4 cyl t5 is crap and blah blah blah which I understand but I need to get a T-5 on this motor because I want to get it moving again. My question is where the tranny goes in the motor and the pilot bearring goes on the shaft the 4 cyl one is smaller, how do i make it work with the 302? do I get a 5.0 pilot and hope for the best? the 2.3 pilot has way too much slack to even attempt it. As always thanks in advance!

1 4 banger T5 is about as strong as your old SROD, the bellhousing for the SROD is the same as a Tremmc 3550....so you will need to swap the housing. The T5 input shaft is smaller for the 2.3 than it is for a 5.0

My trans is out of a 87 4 banger and it takes a beating so i think that being weaker is all in the head lol (not ment to offend) anyway yes you have to get the Pilot bearing for the 4 banger and place it in the 5.0 that is what was done to my car when they put in the tranny before i got it, it feels like there is no play to me when i stuck my finger in it and wiggled it around a bit when i replaced the clutch. anyway i hope that helps

The pilot bearing/bushing will NOT fit into a 302 crank. So what you will need to do is get a pilot bearing for a 5.0 and a 2.3. Then you will need to locate a machine shop near you that can make you a pilot bushing rather thana bearing. Thats what I had to do, they work just as well as a bearing. Theyll need to machine the outside of the bushing with the 302 diameter and the inside (where the input shaft goes) to the 2.3 diameter. It'll need to be made out of bronze. Upon assembly, lube the crap out of the bushing with some really good synthetic grease. As for the rest it bolts up just like a regular 5.0 T-5 would.
-P.
PS: theyll need both of the bearings in order to get the exact measurements they need.

The 4 banger tans will hold up just fine for a while, if you don't hammer it too hard.
A good friend of mine ran a 4cyl trans for about a year with a h/c/i & geared 302. After that I bought the trans to use as a school project. When I pulled that thing apart it was pristine. My buddy is not easy on his car, but rarely misses a shift.
The bellhousing is the same.
The pilot bearing is not that difficult to resolve.
There is a bearing out there that is a standard production part, from a Mazda if memory serves.
Go to a local shop like NAPA (or somewhere else that is willing to do more than look up make and model in their computer).
Have the parts counter clerk pull a bearing for a 5.0 and one for a 2.3.
Get out a pair of calipers and measure the ID of the 2.3 bearing and the OD of the 5.0 bearing.
A good parts store clerk can then take these dimensions and look up an appropriate pilot bearing.
If nothing else, I have heard of guys running the 2.3 trans with the larger (5.0) pilot bearing.
I can't say this is a great idea, but others have said they have done it.

I dunno what the part is or where it came from that is in my Notch i do have a friend i'll talk to tomorrow that converted a 4 banger to a 5.0 using the fact t5 he got a kit from somewhere that came with the alignment tool for a 4 and all the bearings and a 5.0 clutch (and yes when i discovered the trans was a 4 banger trans i did run the vin to find out if my car was a true 5.0 or not and it is )
