New Guy Needs Help!
Hey all,
Well I am not officially a "Mustang Guy" but I am running a 89 302 in my 1965 FFR Cobra. I was always a "Chevy Guy" till now and tinkering with the eec, mass, t/b is taking some getting used to.
Well here is my dilema. I installed the complete "Trick Flow Track Heat" set up on my 302 (Twisted Wedge heads, 1.6 rockers, upper/lower intake, cam- 221/22g@.050 .312/.319 .499/.510 w/1.6 rkrs lobe sep 112). I also installed a 75mm mass, BBK 72mm T/B and 72mm egr spacer and 24# injectors.
I finally got it "turn over ready" this morning and nada, zippo, nilche. After pulling off the front end to make sure my timing gears were set right, they were, I was lost.
I have spark. I have fuel. All new plugs and Mallory Cap, wires and coil.
Then I did the "finger on the spark plug hole" compression test. I had NONE!
It finally dawned on me that my valve lash adjustments were way off. And they were. I adjusted the lash late last nite starting from BDC instead of TDC using TDC guidelines (oops). So after that. . .
Bingo its starts but has one mean *** rough idle that I cannot get rid off. I know the cam is not that hot.
I tried advancing the timing and retarding it. But nothing helps.
I have heard that you are supposed to let the computer set the idle. Then BBK (my 75mm mass and 72mm t/b) and other say to set it manually.
Any ideas? I'm trying hard to learn Ford but this has me stumped because I don't know if the computer has anything to do with it.
Many many thanks in advance from a converted Ford fan,
Chris

1BADASSLX,
Thanks for the reply. Ya really think it would be that choppy. For some reason I didn't think it would. Hmmff.
What idle do you think I shhould set it at. I am runnin a WC T-5 so I imagine 750-1000 rpm's good?
Also should I set the idle manually or let the computer figure it out?
Please bear with me with all my questions. I am sloooowly learning the Ford intake system as opposed to a carb.
THanks again!
Chris

RE: New Guy Needs Help!
i dont blame you for not being a mustang man, i would go with an AC cobra over a Mustang anyday of the month, week, year, anytime, anywhere. I heard one of those things one night at the local Sonic with a 427 Hi-riser and some Side pipes...OMG...thats the first time i sh*t myself since i was in kindergarden.

put a vaccum gauge on it and look to see what the vaccuum readings are. Also you changed the tb and used your old or has new tps whitch ever you will need to adjust it. turn key on and grab your volt meter put on end to ground and the red to the middle wire comming from your tps you need to set it to .68v and then try to restart. Does the exh smell rich of gas?

I dont think its the cam making the idle so rough, because thats not to big of a cam, the lobe sep is nice and streetable to. So, i would definatly check the TPS voltage as Tugby said, make sure you got all your wires straight and to the right cylinders, remember ford is backwards, and #1 is on the passenger side front. The firing order on the dizzy is counterclockwise.
I would also check the Fuel pressure just to do it, and make sure all your wires are hooked up, make sure you didnt get any of the injector plugs mixed up. Its always something small and overlooked.
Whats your timing at by the way?
