Can I use these stangs for project cars?
Is it possible to use ALL 79-85 Mustangs to bolt the 302ci engine to them and a WCT-5 or TKO to them without changing out or making custom engine and transmission supports? I don't have access to a welder- I need one tho, so I'll get one soon enough, but maybe not soon enough for this. Will suspension components and 4-wheel disk setups be hard to find? I know the rear-end is a 7.5 (7.7?), so that would be changed to an 8.8 with a torsen diff.
I would like to turn an old, carbed stang into an autocross car, would it be overly difficult to do on a 79-85 that's not in bad condition? I can only really find the V6's in my area, not even a 4-banger. Can you just drop a 302 in them?
Thanks all, I already have a DD, I would want to make this street legal, but as close to the edge as it could be, as it would be built to haul ***** and compete with porsches. I can get the money over time, but good fab work is HARD to come by in Los Angeles.

Oh also, on these older ones, is the frame as strong as the EFI cars (should be the same). And can the front end be replaced with an 84-85 bumper and grill setup? I love the 4-eyes but I'm not a big fan of the buick grille.

well I think 79-83(or 82) had a narrower body then my 86, I would look for a 85, SAME exact body as my 86, but carb instead of EFI. also 85-86 had the grilless grill, I love it. Also, 85 was the first year of the WC T-5(but has a 10" clutch, 86+ used the 10.5in) and but still had a 7.5in rear end(86 was the 8.8in)

Is there any way to check about body width? Really the only ones that I can find on the recycler are 82 V6's for some reason. I did JUST start looking about 20 minutes ago, and I'm at work so it's not straight searching. What I really want is the grilless-grill model. I don't know EXACTLY what year marks the beginning of the slot grille, but I want one of those over the big *** buick grille. If anyone's an expert, let me know. Also, if any carbed versions can use some suspension components from a 93, let me know that too.

Last I new all 79-93 were same widths and bodies the only differences is the bumpers in them and the dashes. You can drop a 302 in them, my 82 GT has a 302 in it already but it has the 4spd and the 7.5 rear, you can make them into a autocross car by using the t bird front and rear end which are 4 wheel disc like my notchback project and be fine. BTW where do you live and do you have money? ill sell you my 82!!

Great info guys, thanks alot!
82FB, I'm in Los Angeles, CA, all the way on the other side of the country.
I'd buy it too, but shipping's a BEATCH...
unless... is it in good running condition?!
I honestly would be willing to drive it cross-country if it's in good working order and not gonna give me problems on the way back.
