When was the last time you checked the fluid levels and quality? If it's been awhile perhaps it's time to get the fluids flushed (and not just changed.) Sludge buildup and old broken-down fluids can cause major tranny problems.

mine gets really hot by the center console too. ive checked the fulids and they are fine. i was afraid to flush them b/c my little bro is a ford mech and he has seen cars come in running fine they did a tranny flush put in new fluid and then start having problems. he said that with cars with as many miles i mine has -201500- never been rebuilt- that new fluid will make too much pressure and start breaking things since the fulid in there is old started to break down. the best thing to do is add a little at a time when it needs it or do a rebuild.

sounds like the clutch to me to, or a cable heating up and stretching when hot.

When you burn a clutch up, it'll hit about 5K then slip and wont go any furthur
