camshaft removal
Hello, maybe im just retarded but ive never done it before. So I have the 302 block completely stripped except for the lifters and the camshaft and I took the plate off the front of the camshaft with the two bolts holding it on and threaded the bolt back to the middle of the camshaft but I cant seem to work it out of the block. Is there a trick to this?? Also In the front of the engine in the lifter valley I have a quarter size hole on the wall of the block around where the distributor goes and it goes from the lifter valley to the inside of where the timing cover would be. Thanks for help, Chris

Get a longer bolt and put in it and then pull out on it.
Did you take all the lifters out? Cause you shouldnt be trying to take it out without the lifters out. When you get that longer bolt, just take one of the cam gear bolts and take it to Ace or someplace and get them to get you one with the same thread size but longer. That makes pulling a cam 100% easier. Then just try to spin it and work it loose and then pull out on it. Make sure to support it while its coming out and not to bark the lobes on the cam bearings inside the block.

For the lifters, just unbolt the spyder, that thing inside the lifter valley that has two bolts in the middle holding it down, take it out, just unscrew the bolts and it just lifts out. Then the lifters should just come out...do you have the heads off and everything, like where is the engine? In the car, on a stand? You need the rockers out and the pushrods out to get the lifters and cam out.
AS far as the hole. Im not to sure what your describing...can you describe it a little better?
Thanks.

RE: camshaft removal
Well I got the lifters out, there was years of gunk built up from sitting around. Anyway the front of the block where the timing cover bolts to there is a passage that runs to the lifter valley from inside the timing cover and then it runs to the oil pan. I think it is probably just lubrication passages for the gears and the camshaft and lifters. Correct me if im wrong. Chris

RE: camshaft removal
yea, thats an oil gally, lub for the timing set like you said. It should of had plugs in them.
Now with the lifters out the cam should just slid out. If its on a stand, when i got my 302, it had been setting in a garage for about 234,339,487,383 years. So the cam was pretty seized into the bearings. So i had to pop the plug from the back of the block, then take a deep well socket and put it up against the back of the cam and tapped it with a ball peen hammer, then it knocked it loose enough for me to take it out.

Thanks for all the help, now time to either do the machine work on this block or decide to take it to a shop. Im boring and stroking it to 347 so it wont be an easy task but in the same sense, not to difficult. Chris
