Bad Maf Meter?

Anyone know a sure fire way to tell if a MAF meter is toast? Will it show a code or something? I think mine might be bad but I'm not sure and I wanna make sure its bad before I spend $240 on a new one.

It may throw a lean code, like as if it were dirty since the sensor can't read as well dusted up.

tap it with a screwdriver while the car is running

if the car gets all retarded.... then your maf is probably bad... but dont be like my dumbass friend and slam it with a fire extinguisher..... what a fking moron
