Idle/accelerating problem

Idle/accelerating problem
Hey guys. I have a '95 GT 5.0 (auto), and heres the problem. When I turn the car on, and it starts idling, it goes down to under 1000 rpm, then back up to a little above 1000, then back and forth. It sounds like its about to stall, but then starts up again and almost stalls again and continues. Now, when I take off, it drops below 1000 rpm again, almost stalls, then jumps up to where I accelrated.
I asked around and people say it could be the fuel filter, and mine looks rusty and probably wasn't changed (2nd owner) before, so I boght one and I am going to replace it anyway (even if it isn't the problem) but when I disconnect the old filter, won't gas start pouring out of the fuel lines? If so, how do I change the filter?
I will post after I replace the filter to see if that solved the problem... I'm also thinking it could be a clogged injector.

RE: Idle/accelerating problem
I have the exact same problem with my car. Makes me look like I cant drive a stick when i take off. I am going to change my plugs, wires and dist cap and rotor, mine look old. Hopefully it solves the problem. Ill let you know if it helped when I get them installed.

Couple of things come to mind. Idle air control (IAC) or the throttle position sensor (TPS). The IAC you can remove and clean, most of the time that will take care of the problem. With the TPS, on some cars you can recalibrate them, basically resetting them, and on others you cant and would just have to replace the sensor.

Forgot to ask, is your check engine light on? Another thing came to mind after I thought about it for a second. A malfunctioning EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve could be sticking, allowing too much exhaust gas to be recirculated. Which could cause a hesitation, or overall poor performance, misfires, etc.

Nope, it stays the same the whole time. After I get passed that one part int he beging, after I accelerate it alsmost stalls and thenjumps up after that it's fine. After it shifts its ok too.
But can someone give me info on how to replace the fuel filter?

RE: Idle/accelerating problem
yes gas will come out. have a couple of rags handy and open the gas cap to help release pressure. You may want to release it at the schraeder valve behind the alternator, also. It will help, but gas will still come out....just make sure you and your face are not directly under the filter when you change it. A flat head screwdriver will pop those clips out, just be sure you loosen the bracket so the filter will come out before you remove the lines.
