Launching an Automatic

Launching an Automatic
Hey guys,
I am confused as to the best way to launch my auto. Last night I was racing and off the line I probably gave it about 1/2 throttle and I spun the back tires pretty bad. Should I be power braking (hold brake to desired RPM and go) or is this bad for the car? Can somebody please explain to be in as much detail as possible the best way to launch my auto?
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help.
Jimmy

RE: Launching an Automatic
Basically, hold the brake and give it gas until the point just before the tires start to spin while holding the brake. If they do spin, just let off a little and hold it there. When it's time to go release the brake and hit the throttle. Problem is...with a stock converter, you're not gonna gain much.

RE: Launching an Automatic
Do all the AOD people leave it in drive when they race? When I put it in drive it spins them off the line, but it still feels slow. The second gear scratch is awesome but before it shifts to second it feels kinda weaksauce.
I know the 1-D-1 shuffle is bad, but what about putting it in 1st then shifting it to drive and leaving it there? When I put it in 1st and hit the gas it really throws you back unlike it does when it's in drive. What's the best way to use an AOD at the track?
Sorry for the thread jack and getting a little off topic.

Auto's have torque converters, if yours is stock, then it's about 1900 RPM's. When you launch an automatic, you want to have the motor at the highest RPM without spinning. For example, hold the brake, start slowly giving it gas until it starts to spin watch the tach and see where it is right before it spins. That will be where you should launch at. When my Stang was stock, I could launch it at 2100 RPM's. DON'T launch while spinning, because you will NOT get any traction...

power brake-good
neutral drop-BAD
with your 2800stall, brake it to 2800 then let go of the brake on punch the gas, with street tires you might not get any traction, if not , then just don't launch at as high rpm next time

If you put the car in nuetral and rev it up a little and hit the brake at the same time you can get the brake to go down further! but you might bog down some you might not I've noticed with my auto I can accel fast if i shift at like 4600 rpms.. Is it bad if you go D,2,D? because i do that when i race.. oh i also have 2.73's tho and that are the WORST!!!!!! 4:10's on the way!
