Default Looking to buy a 5.0

Hey what's up guys? I'm Bryan from the Dallas/Garland Texas area. Anyways, I'm looking into getting into the racing scene and the 5.0 really stands out to me. I was going to get a civic or an integra, but my friend Will (who drives a brand new TA) told me that if I wanted to go fast for less cash and whoop most of the Civics in my area, I should get a 5.0 So I'm looking into the 87-93 models (fox bodies are phat) and I would like to know if any of you have opinions on that generation of Mustangs. Any websites with aftermarket parts would be very helpful as well. BTW, I will probably have close to 3k by the end of summer...will it get ne a decent buy for a 5.0? I would love to have some possible 'stang friends on AIM so hit it up.

If you're just looking for a car to drag at your local track, of course, then I'd recommend a notchback LX 5.0 from 88-93 (if the notch was offered every year). The notch is the lightest of the three body styles (notch, hatch, and convert), and the LX is apparently lighter than the GT (not so much plastic). $3000 might get you a decent one. IIRC 88 is when they changed to mass air from the manifold pressure and the MAF will respond to mods a lot better.

I got a '93 in '95. Because it was a convertable and was in real nice shape. They are the heaviest and ford also derated the hp from 225 to 205 due to the installation of hypereutectic pistons. Did a bunch of the standard bolt ons, and it's no slouch. But if you're serious, go with heads, intake and exhaust before starting on the little stuff. That's where the serious hp comes in.

I bought an 87 hatchback LX 5.0 and it's done me a lot of good. I purchased it for about 3300 bucks. then I invested in 3.73 gears, posi system, k&n air filter, 24lb/hr injectors, street drag radial tires, MAC shortie headers, a comp camshaft, a B&M ripper shifter (short throw) and i'm getting some ZEX Nitrous hooked up soon... before the nitrous, i ran at 270 rearwheel hp. and 300 torque. The nitrous adds another 150 hp, so i'll have about 400 hp when all is settled. So i'd go with a hatch for about 3grand.

Go with a Notchback like they are saying. Lighter and i think they look the coolest to (Just my opinion) heres a thought though. If it's going to be a street car , think about finding a 4 banger an converting to 5.0 . I got my 4 banger 191 Notchback for $900 and other than the clearcoat peeling on the outside and needing som new trim , the interior and body of the car is immaculate. Plus 4 bangers don't get driven as hard a 5.0's so they are usually in better condition. As far as the swap , if i hadn't made some stupid mistakes while doing the swap , it would have only taken a week max to get the engine in perfectly and paint the engine bay and make the wiring all look good. Mayeb 3 days max to do the basic swap without making it all pretty. And check this out ,I got the 5.0 engine , tranny , and 8.8 rear end for $800 from a cougar. Plus all the plumbing brake stuff and everything off the car.it might not be the greatest 5.0 but with the money I saved I can eventually make it pound the ground like no civic ever dreamed of. As far as factory stock 5.0 mustangs ,I see fox bodys going for $2000-2500 all the time around here ( Mostly worn out crap though) but you can get a pretty nice one for $3000-4000. Alot of people fix them up and have to sell them for reasons later , and the sad truth is that it's hard to get your money back out of them , so you can find great ones people are forced to sell every once in a while . But anywayyou can builda great looking street car cheap out of a 4 banger with alittle effort. As far as drag racing , same thing , Notchback. Strip it down and build it up .
