Default another quick question with bumping timing

im in the garage bumping my timing..or trying to. and i know i hook the wires up to the battery, then the inductive lead wire goes onto the number 1 spark plug.

when i put onto the number 1 spark plug..do i take the wire off? or just clip it onto the wire thats on the distributor on spark plug 1?
