Temperature Sending Unit - Need Advice
Hi Guys -
Forgive me, but I am new to this.
I have a 1989 Mustang LX (5.0) and my temperature gage doesn't work.
As info, the heater core broke and is now bypassed (no hoses/tubes going into the heater core).
From reading on this forum, I believe it doesn't matter since the temeprature sending unit that provides feedback to the gage, sits on the intake manifold to the front right of the lower intake when looking at the motor from the front of the car. Is this correct?
Does anyone have a better picture of the sending unit than what I found in the Haynes book?
Also, how could I test if the temperature sending unit is broken, or the gage is faulty? I think the unit is not that expensive, but if it can be tested, that would be great. Does it have to do with the by-passed heater core?
Any help??? Please.
Thanks, Chris

RE: Temperature Sending Unit - Need Advice
Nice,
my Hayes manual states to use two resistors on the cable, one to represent hot and one cold. Put into disconnected wire and ground to engine. Gauge should indicate hot engine. If indication is properly, the sending unit is bad.
My problem until now is to find that da#@ sender unit and wire. First I thought I found it, but I think I found the oil-pressure unit just above the oil filter. I used an ohm meter on that. the wire was ok, but testing the unit it didn't show anything (on the oil pressure unit). not sure what to think of that, because I see good oil temperature and don't have an extra oil pressur egauge. Any input on that one too?
Mor eimportant is the temperature test unit thoguh, because the gauge is not showing anything. I will try y'alls input tomorrow.
Thanks and please keep it coming if you have more info.

One more thing.
What is the difference between a coolant sensor and a temperature sending unit?
on www.yearone.com, I can find both, but one (coolant sensor) is $30.95 and the temperature sending unit (SW925) is $15.90.
Yes, the price is different and I believe the purpose is different too. Any input. Sorry

Take a look at it and maybe someone knows the difference. I think I am actually in need of the cheaper on in case my gauge checks out to be ok.

i thought the sending unit or temp switch sends the temp to ur gauge and ur coolant sensor sends it to ur computer, so u have two actually, since a 92 camaro a guy i know has two and my truck does
