Smoking Problem

Smoking Problem
I have an oppurtunity to buy a car. It is a 1995 5.0 supercharged, just rebuilt 1500 miles ago, running around 9 psi boost. The problem it is having is that when you have it to the floor in third gear and you let off to go into 4th, it smokes, but then it stops as soon as the clutch is back in. What would cause that? Sounds to me like maybe the timing is off a little bit and the crankcase is building too much pressure. I wonder if i just got a valve cover with a breather on both sides of the engine if that would fix it? Any ideas? I would sure hat to get a junker car again, but this sounds lke an easy fix. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks, robert

RE: Smoking Problem
did you check the fluids, is there oil/coolant mixed (head gasket is generally white smoke). Does the car have aftermarket fuel pump, fpr, and upgraded injectors to support the s/c, has the maf been cal'd to match? These may be causing a lean/rich condition at WOT.
maybe timing, if you have a light check it at the guys house w/ a light, timing generally has to be retarded on s/c setup. Car may need a dyno tune custom chip and tune up. Hard to tell, Good Luck though.

RE: Smoking Problem
It has been dyno tuned with a custom burned diablo chip. I dunno about the mass air though. Why would it only do it when you let off to shift into fourth though? It has aftermarker fuel pump, and regulator, and 42# injectors.
Do you guys think that it could be something serious or just a tuning problem. It is oil, not gas or antifreeze by the way.

RE: Smoking Problem
its probably nothing, but it couldnt hurt to at least do a compression check and a leak down test.
too much boost on a fresh engine may not have allowed the rings to seat. it probably has just a bit
smoke on all shifts but 3rd to 4th probably loads the engine more.

RE: Smoking Problem
yea if it has a tune already they would have took into consideration the MAF for air/fuel ratio that would cause a lean/rich condition, i'd do a compression test and then if you buy it get ahold of a wide band air/fuel monitor and see how the data adds up, good luck
