Default clunkin in front end?

Hi, im a new user to this website... so im still learning the ropes...

A few weeks ago i purchased an 89 mustang. Its been running great but, i noticed a clunking noise everytime i touch the gas very gently. Im pretty sure its a metal against metal noise. It has a brand new tranny and clutch with just above 200 miles on it. One thing i thought it might be is something in the rear end banging when i tap the gas. If anyone has any thoughts could they please let me know what you think it is? Thanks....

welcome to the forum, you sadi it was a clunking but is it from the front end or the rear end of the car of center console area? If its the rear end were the ring and pinion gears replaced when the motor and tranny were replaced, if they weren't shimmed properly they will be noisy, as for the front end, is the noise from the motor? lifter, pushrod, etc, or from the chasis or suspension. try to post more detail so we can help you out

hey...the clunkin seemed like it came from the rear end..But i will check it out later today again and try to find a more specific spot on the car that its coming from. I cant do much now because im at college...ttyl
p.s. it only does it when the car is in gear....mostly while driving down the road.

sounds like the ring and pinion gears aren't installed properly and perhaps they need to be replaced, if so then upgrade to 3.73's, try putting the car in neutral and pushing it, if it still does it then the tranny is ruled out of the equation. Good Luck

That clunk clunk when you just tap your foot on the pedal is in your reaarend, its caused by either worn or improper placed ring and pinion gears. But if youre lucky, you might have a bad universal. Get those checked first.

hey thanks for all your help but i put the car up on jacks and took a look at it and the drive shaft was loose. There were only 2 bolts half way in a 2 were only on by about a thread.

Finally some good luck on my part. If i had driven down the road about another mile or 2 it prob would have fallen off. But like all of you said it was in the rear.

Nice work. Glad it was something simple. Use some loc-tite on the DS bolts and that won't happen agian. Good luck and welcome.
