Default linkage problem???

hey guys i got a question..... i got an 86 stang and the lady that i got it from said that it has a new transmission but when i got it back from the shop today and they told me that first and second gear dont work so i think that it is a linkage problem. The questions is how would i go about checking that and/ or fixing it ?
