okay, so i have power off the main power wire to the headlight switch (the gray wire) but when its grounded elsewhere in the car, its an normally closed circuit the (light in the guage always stays on). Do I ground it at another wire in the switch?

wow, that was fast!!

well, the problem is, i have power at the guage. Its just its constant power because theres no ground interrupter to open the circuit when the headlight switch is off.

wait a minute. Do you know which wire in the headlight switch is for the dashlights? If i powerd it off that one, it'd only come on when the switch is on.

Guages have three wires usually.

Turn-on (not constant)
Ground
Illumination.

Tap Turn-on wire to a larger wire that is red with a green stripe. This will be found under your dash.

Screw the ground to any metal of the vehicle or place on an existing bolt that is bolted to metal.

Illumination tap into brown wire that is going to be found behind your light switch.

Also never use a test light...always use a voltmeter. If you ever accidentally probed a wrong wire with a test light then you could cause damage to components in the vehicle because the light has a much lower resistance than a voltmeter.
