Are you talking about an actual shifter or a shift kit? If your looking to replace the shifter it really isn't going to do much w/ a stock valve body.

To answer the rest of your question, a shift kit will give you quicker shifts and let you shift at a higher rpm, if im not mistaken(i have a T-5).
