Default Automatic or Manual?

I am assuming most here if not all want Manual but is there really that big of a difference in performance? I ask this because I have the change to buy a 93 red convert 5.0 auto for 5k with only 50k on the motor.

Thanks

It dont matter, I live in the city and a 5 speed would not fit in.

manual transmissions are definitely more fun to drive, but automatics are more practical in the city though less reliable. The AOD transmission is a pos I have one in my car and it's only good for 300hp so imagine my surprise when I reached 400hp and my tranny failed(stupid trannies). but if you have a chance to buy one w/ only 50k on the odometer and it's true I say buy it because 5k is a good deal hell if you talk him under 4500 you'd be getting a better deal then I did when I bought mine. But if it doesn't check out I'd say go w/ a manual that's what I wanted but bought an auto and now I regret it. just my opinion

I forgot to say, if you're planning on serious drag racing(which i pray not w/ only 50k on the odo), then go w/ the automatic because eventhough it has an aod in it now it's easier to swap one auto for another than an auto for a manual and vice versa

I agree... if you live in a city, stop/go traffic, ya gotta have an automatic... an autos can be mildly modded to be faster, and in the race world automatics are definately faster than manuals... having said that, manuals are more fun...

I you wanna go fast and be consistent get an AOD car and build it up. If you're too chicken to mess around with automatics get a 5 spd.

Thanks for all the replies guys. This helps clear up a lot of things.

I do plan to do a good amonut of driving in traffic etc so it may make more sense to go with a AOD.

Thanks Again!

The AOD is actually a great automatic transmission. There's a lot of people swapping them into their falcons and vintage 'stangs. It just needs some help making it a good "performance" tranny. Just little things such as properly adjusting your TV cable to give you the shiftpoints that you want and getting hard shifts is one thing, a looser torque converter can REALLY wake things up, it's the best thing that you could do for an AOD.
