Default This can't be good!!!

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen anyting like this. I was putting my motor back together after a tear down and I look into the distributor well to inspect it and this is what I see. Is this supposed to look broken like this or is mine truly broken? I'm sure that if this peice is in my motor that it will completely destroy it if I try to start it, but I don't think that it is in there because it ran just fine before I took it apart and I know that I didn't do this to it so it must have been there before. So If i start it and the peice isn't in there I know that it will run fine, but is this something that I should look into replacing or just leave it as is? Please help, no one I know has ever seen anything like this.

Its broken where you put the distributer in to mesh with the oil pump driveshaft. It should be perfectly round. I'd be worried about where that piece of metal went before starting it up.
