Why is everyone afraid to go 351w?

It really wont cost that much more though... I have seen 351W blocks go for $50 bucks. Pick up one, buy the conversion kit and a rotating assembly, machine shop, done.
Or just buy a built shortblock and save youself the cash from a machine shop.

whats the point here? it cost ALOTof elbow grease, some frustration MONEY and GAS.
good luck finding a 351w without it having to be gone completely through, usually, they sit for years rust up inside and blocks crack.
Example a 1969 351w my buddy bought $500 yard, Crank Shot, Block needed cleaning , blasting, boring , honing, oversized bearings, camshaft area pitted, sleeves in the cyls, old rusted and stripped threads, rear cranks seal area pitted all kind of stuff he couldnt see. Cost $910 in machine work . There is 1500 just getting the block and having it prepped, now add $ 1000 for conversion parts( headers, oil pan flywheel, harmonic balancer etc, then add $ 1300 for stroker and balance, then add seals, gaskets, motor mounts.
Now another $ 1600 for heads, rollers, camshaft.

i dont put used engines in, i would pull a 302 and rebuild it the same so its a moot point. if you really wanted a 351w you didnt have to build i could get you a 1995 roller complete in the truck still.

RE: Why is everyone afraid to go 351w?
it's just really preference. the 351 is all around bigger. takes up more room in the engine bay, it's heavier. i havent done any research into them to know if the block is much stronger if it is at all. for the size reason alone, when i get a motor im goin with a 302 block and doin a 331 or 347. i've looked into it and the site im getting the bottom end from www.dssracing.com has the bottom end i want that can handle gobs of power for cheaper than they sell the 351 bottom end. plus i have smog to tune around also. without smog, id prolly go big with a 408 stroker or something. just would cost me a little more.

It is that easy. There are a few things that need to be changed (hood, oil pan, headers, lower manifold). But if you are stroking your motor than you have to pull everything anyway! They make a conversion kit with everything that you need for like $500 bucks. If your pulling your motor a 351W is the ONLY way to go IMO.

I would like to include it in my write up.

I have the opportunity to buy a '73 ford truck with a newly rebuilt 351W w/ maybe 30k miles on it for $500...go or no? The motor was rebuilt by my machinist/mechanic uncle.
