I changed the plug wires the other day and wired 'em up for an HO and got nothing out of the motor. So then I rearranged the plug wires to a standard 302 and it fired right up. Still doesnt explain why its dying out at 5000rpm, unles the computer is still thinking it's an HO when it's really not.
5 grand is where they die out. It is possible it is running rich, yours being a speed density car (assuming you're not from Cali.) That's quite the modification you have for a speed density car, would not be able to handle that big of a change

I used to have another 88 and i've revved it up to 65-7000 before.... when i say it dies, i mean it will not rev past 5000..... it acts like it has a rev limiter.... but it also responds to timing changes.... before i started tinkering with it, it would only rev to about 4500

if you did the 5.0 ho wirring order and it didnt run then you switched to the standard firring order and it ran.. then that pretty much narrows it down to you haveing a non ho 5.0.. i think.. but i'm not sure.. ford did use the 5.0 ho intakes through the 80's on t-birds with 5.0's but they werent a 5.0 Ho... sorry man... sounds like you got ripped off.. i mean.. if it's a nice car cool.. but there is actually a big difference between a 5.0 ho and the standard 5.0.. about 75 horse and 50 ft/lbs of torqe to be exact... sorry man.

If you ever have an HO again don't EVER rev it that high again. Good way to split your block.

you are the reason for rev limiters... and yea sounds like a basic 5.0 w/ the HO intake there bub... sorry to hear that

and if i'm not mistaken all motors will respond to timing advances and retarding

Dont need to sale it. you dont have a timing issue. The cam in a stock 5.0 dies about 5000. yes any engine will respond to any timing change.

Easy solution...since you said it has the non HO firing order, go find you a used exploder motor. It'll have GT40 or P heads and the Explorer intake which is basically the same or similar to a Cobra intake. Also, the motor will be HO, just needs a different cam and new lifters, pushrods, and valvesprings.
