Default Finally a 5.0 driver

Been reading these forums for awhile, always have had much love the 5.0 and especially the foxbody... maybe it has something to do with the fox I totaled when I was 4... what can I say, I was starting young. For the longest time now I've been driving a Nissan Altima 4-banger with about as much pull as a arthritic donkey, so finally getting behind the wheel of my "new" 87 5.0 was... liberating.

She's got some work to be done... *cough*brakes, alignment, tires, paint, tad bit of body work, whole lot of interior work, and that pesky transmission leak...*cough*, but that's alright. Only questions are where I should go for my interior needs [dash, console, seats, carpet, the whole nine yards], and if a surging idle when first starting is normal or something I should give attention? It surges for about 10-15 seconds until eventually settling at around 800... it was surging alot worse before and I was unable to shift to R/D/1 [AOD] without killing it but cleaning the TB/IAC seemed to cure it of those issues [and there was a fair bit of carbon coming out in the carb cleaner runoff].

Anyone have an idea of how much I'm looking at if I want to bring it into a shop and have a laundry list of things done to it? The list being: front brake pads, alignment, new street performance tires [could use some suggestions here, but I have a search button too], full tune-up/liquids and the tranny leak. Money is tight right at the moment, but next month I'll be able to start working on it.

Eventually, once the interior and body are where I want them, I'll start pouring some money into the engine/tranny which is mostly stock. Got lots of stuff planned but more worried about looks until I have more knowledge about mods and whatnot. I know gears [which are still stock []], intake, h/c/i, exaust and suspension are on that list, but time and money is against me for now.

Ramble ramble ramble, I do that well... I'll try to get some pictures if anyone cares, it's two-tone black over gray with OZ racing wheels [Cobra Rs will replace those]... aftermarket hood w/ pins, t-top, looks fairly good but not perfect. Last owner was fairly neglectful it seems, so I'll have to turn that around. Sorry for the long post, just happy to finally be a member of the 5oh drivers club.

Welcome aboard, and you have fine fox. Pick up a copy of 5.0 Mustangs and Fast Fords, good deals if you look for interior parts. And check out the selection of sponsors on this board. Also look on E-bay, just be careful about what you buy and from whom you buy it from. I have almost gotten to the point of only buying from online stores than individuals. Now the fun begins, you will spend a little here and little there, and next thing you know, you just have to have something else. Its a sickness really..................like dad used to say, if its tires or *****, you cant afford it!

- I wasn't looking for just 87 when I was shopping for a fox at first, but used that just now to get the link to post here.

- Yes, the green lights are horrid... they are among the first changes that will be made... back to stock for them.

- The ad says 420hp, he told me "390-420 at the crank" when I was buying it, and in the end I don't believe it's anywhere close. It still has stock gears, so I'm sure that doesn't help, but it just didn't respond anything like I would have expected a 400hp pony to. I won't know for sure though until after getting 3.73s and some bolt-ons/exhaust then have it dyno tuned. I am curious what the rwhp is right now, but not curious enough to pay for the dyno time. I'm still waiting on the list of mods from the previous owner, gonna bug'em about it tomorrow.

I can't even drive it right now b/c of the trans leak, I'm so sad... Once I get through CCRS I'll have enough to get her fixed up at Big O's. Can't wait. =)
