Default which is cheaper?

I just bought a 1991 GT w/ 5.0 that is using a lot of oil. Which is cheaper and which is better? should i rebuild this block and bore it and put new stuff in or should i buy a crate engine
or long block and if the later, where is a good but cheap place to look at to buy. I'm in North Carolina close to Charlotte. Any ideas or help. Thanks in advance.

+1 I really dont like crate motors all that much unless they are dirt cheap. You can always build your own motor cheaper and lots of times have a good shop build you the same motor for cheaper. A rebuild on the motor and than the TF kit wouldnt be a bad idea...

^+1 crate motors are way overpriced.... hundreds or thousands more than if you were to build your own or pick your own components, plus who wants to be like yea i got a 302 crate motor, or be like yea i got a 302 block with this that and the other and it'll beat you a$$

+1 on the rebuild. If you know how to do it properly, and have the tools necessary to measure all the tolerances. You might not need to bore it if its not outta spec. That way all youd really need to do is hone the cylinders and replace the rings and bearings, saving yourself $$$$ on pistons, machine work, etc.

Im afraid it will have to be bored because it has 210,000 miles on it. really runs pretty good but smokes and uses a lot of ooil, so new everything inside probably .
either that or find a newer block and build it like I want it

I wouldn't say crate motors are overpriced. Yes you could build an equal or even better motor for less. The point of a crate motor is that you are getting a turn key motor. Your paying for somebody else to do everything for you. They back up their work with a warranty. Which of course is why its alot cooler to have a motor you built yourself then it is to have one that you ordered online. But for the mechanically disabled its a great concept.

I agree that crate motors are great for someone that doesnt have the time or knowledge to build their own motor. Here is a nice motor for not to bad a price http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Its always very tempting. To think you could bolt that in in a day and be putting 290hp to the ground.
