dont buy a crate motor, you can buy a dart short block and top end kit from trickflow for a lot less than a crate motor

This motor would handle more power/boost.

I've seen other people make this statement, but when ever I run the numbers I come up with a built shortblock motor costing far more than a crate motor. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. I don't doubt at all that a built motor will out perform a crate motor, but cost the same or even less? I'm looking to put a new motor in my car over the winter and had pretty much decided to go with a ford crate motor, cuz' I've only got about a $4000-$5000 budget to work with. I'd love to start with a stronger shortblock since I'd like to eventually install a supercharger, but had pretty much given up hope that I'd be able to afford one.

stock/plus 351W short block w/ flywheel and balancer needed: $2,000
TwistedWedge Heads ................... $1,000 or better AFR 185's ........ $1,300
Stroker cam ............................... $250
Misc swap parts needed ............. $1000 (oil pan, distrib, gaskets, headers, ect.. )
TrickFlow 5.8L intake ................. $550

I am doing something similar right now,

Thats a 400+hp engine for apx. .............. $4,750-$5,000 includes intake and headers

I can layout how to do this in detail if you wish

Pushrods?
Roller Rockers?

The great part about a crate motor is you don't have to worry about all these small things which add up really quick when building a motor.

ok pushrods are like $20
rockers $200
lifters $150

bad things about crate engines is they dont always
use the best parts and cost more than buying the parts seperate.
