I'm honestly not too sure, feels like it could be under me, also feels like it could be behind me...how can bad tranny mounts cause a clunk when the clutch is let out?

your drive train flexes when it is under torque (releasing the clutch)... your rearend rotates upward... bad tranny mounts would allow movement as well...

Hm...so so far things to check:

Tranny mounts, rear u-joint. Anything else? I'm replacing the clutch in my car next month, I guess I'll replace the tranny mounts then.

How likely is it that this problem is not related to any of internals of the rear end?

So it's most likely not that. Hopefully it'll be a tranny mount or u joint (dont think it could be anything else). Anything else to look at?

i think it is the u joint. if it is worn it will make that noise, y it comes from when the clutch comes out is because that is when the rotational force is applied to that part.

your u-joint has to be on its very last leg to cause a clunk though. Ill be interested to see if thats whats causing it. im sure its been said, but crawl under the car, grab your driveshaft, and try to shake it back and forth. If you have any play at all, chang your universals. was there a vibration before it started clunking? usually, or at least in the jeep world (theres a HUGE difference between wranglers and mustangs, I understand) your universals will cause a vibration before they start clunking.
