Default grinding problem in 86 GT

I installed the Hurst shifter not only hoping for all the great things about a short throw shifter, but to help with another problem. When I get into the throttle and go to shift into second, it will grind going in. It only does it when i'm getting on it prettty good. During regular driving there isn't any problem. Any help would be appreciated. I plan on taking my car to the closest track and doing a little running on the street to. Grinding 2nd just isn't going to get it done.

well dont take my word for it cus im not too experienced, but if it grinds going into 2nd it sounds like your clutch isnt engaging fully. especially if its only at higher rpms.

Did it before you changed the shifter? All the gears or only 2nd?

Yes it did it before I switched out the shifter. It only does it in 2nd gear. The rest do not give me any trouble. Every now and then reverse does not want to go in. I just put the car into 5th then into reverse.

My bet it is your sycros. Reverse will always do it, it isn't syconized. 5th to reverse is what I do to fix it, it lines up the gears.

fella's what can I do about this. Don't mean to be a newb here but i'm in the dark when it comes to what you are talking about. If this is something that is really going to cost me, i'm going to have to deal with it until winter break. Is this going to be ok. This is my DD so the last thing I need is getting stuck on the side of the road. Thanks for all the help so far.

meh.. you should be ok for a while. just dont go beatin on it all the time. as for the sycro the brass ones tend to wear down and go bad, to cange it out you gotta pull the trans, and dig into it. it is possibe to do yourself, but if your not confident, i would take it out myself, and take it to a reputable shop and have them replace it w/ a new carbon fiber sycro. they are much stronger and smoother. if it was me i would want them to show me it before they sealed it all up too. good luck!!

Thank ya plenty. Must definitely something that is going to have to wait till winter break. I need my car in one piece. A buddy of mine's dad own's a tranny shop so hopefully he could help me out. People around where I live seem to like the idea of trading off work for work. Maybe he will need to get a room painted in trade. oh well thanks again
