Default Flywheel

How difficult is it to strip the teeth off a flywheel.. i just got a new high torque mini-starter and it isnt catching on anything anymore... it always made a little bit of a grinding noise after the install and about a month later it doesnt grab anymore... it isnt a stock flywheel, it is a billet steel flywheel... it happened to my previous starter and i thought it might be the starter(just a factory one), so i pulled it out and there were little nicks on the starter teeth, but nothing major, and it was completely functional on a bench test...

Aha whoa... I just pulled mine off rougly 15 minutes ago because of this problem... took me an hour and 15 minutes to get it out... made good time, that made my day a little better. Sending it in tomorrow to get a new ring installed on it... I'd suggest getting it done proffessionally, never done one myself.

Most likely your bendix spring broke happens very ofter especially if its not meshing with the flywheel perfectly, it will kill starters quickly...just happened to me twice in a month granted the first one was old and the second one was used... and on a bench test it will still spin it just doesnt push out because the bendix is broke.

Aha I've had nothing but trouble with my POS. Fords definately have the worst setup for starters, by far. Gone throught 2 block plates, 1 and one starter rebuild... need I mention I've havent even driven this car yet? only been started maybe 20 times since I've owned it... This time everything's gonna be new.. New ring on the flywheel, new block plate and i'm putting a new gear in the starter... Starter also binds into the flywheel so I have to take a ratchet to the crank to get it to snap back... if this doesn't work... I'm punting this thing off the jack stands.

The bendix wasnt broken, the drive gear did push out. I was at a tech school when i tested it and my instructor said he didnt know what was wrong with it. This problem is really making me angry, since I have long tube headers, its a PAIN IN THE A$$ to get the f-ing starter out. Takes me a couple hours just to get it out, and putting a new one in takes a lot longer. I have no idea whats wrong with it, but it just spins and doesnt even hit anything. It always made a little bit of a grinding noise when starting after the install, then it got worse and then it wont even hit the flywheel all-together. It just spins...
