Stick to the basics. Don't swap out the carb. It's a solid unit Holley 600. Swap the intake instead. I'd suggest an Edelbrock Stealth. I had one on my '84. Worked awesome. Then I'd install sub-frame connectors and some type of traction bars, and 3.55 or 3.73 gears. Do the entire exhaust too, shorties, h or X pipe and a good cat back sys. I'd also go with a short shifter.

Keep it four eyed.

I'm sure there's a stickie about first mods in here somewhere, check it out for all the basics.

really that holley is a tad too big ..a nice 570 demon will make for a really crisp throttle response....and there is tons of adjustment for a holley to improve it

the only legal intake other than stock is Edelbrock's Performer 302, which flows almost identically to the stock intake. JBA is the only company to make a shorty header, and the Holley is just fine. Where you live?

WITH STOCK HEADS AND CAM it's a must you use a dual plane intake...for good bottom end

Full exhaust is what will get you the biggest bang for your buck. I went from stock 141rwhp to 189rwhp with '86 headers, dual cat 2.25" h-pipe and 2.25" Flowmaster aftercat. Then I added a edelbrock performer intake and underdrive pullies and I'm sitting on 210rwhp and 270rwtq. The exhaust will not do as much for you since you already have tubular headers and a dual aftercat, but it will still help a ton when you rid yourself of that factory y-pipe.

I don't think smog is an issue for him. I would get he edelbrock performer air gap manifold. I would also swap the transmission cross member for the later one and put a true dual exhaust on. As for the carb a 650 might run alright and would give you some top end but you might run too rich. Also swap the 7.5 rear end out for a 8.8 and put some gears in it.
