Default 3.55 gears

hey can someone give me an estimate of how much it would cost to have a shop redo my rear gears to 3.55 from 4.10's. THe gears are about 190 i heard, but what is a good installation price? Is it possible to do in my home garage? thanks

Probably not a good idea to do it yourself as everything has to be put together perfectly. Most shops will charge anywhere from 200-250 and up for labor.

Between $250-450 on the install. No you can't do the swap at home, you have to have the gears gaped perfectly to the differential, too tight and you'll burn up your rear end, too loose and you'll strip it out.

I got a quote of $325 + tax to install 4.10's in my car with all new bearings. Thats with me bringing my own gears.
I found a guy to do it for $150 if I bring the gears and installation kit (new bearings, seals, etc). I just need to set up a time for him to do it.

Depending on the area you live in but anywhere from 250 to 550. I recommend you do it at a shop that way they can calibrate you gears with the speedo.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you changing your gear ratio from 410's to 355's? Curious to know. Also is your car a 5 speed or auto?

All you need to fix the speedometer is a $20 TCI speedometer correction gear from Jeg's. I just got mine today.

FYI ... the speedo gear is attached to the end of the speedo cable hook to the drivers side of the transmission and can be changed for $12 (from 5.0 resto) and removing one 7/16" bolt is all you have to take off, to swap out! the gears dont get cal'd to the speedo, its the other way around.

As for doing this yourself its not super complicated given you have the correct tools, bearing press, bearing puller, torque wrenches ("lbs & ft lbs), dial guage to measure backlash, assorted wrenches, and such, but if you've never done this try to find someone who has and they can teach you so in the future your not dropping a few hundred bucks in labor on a job that takes a few hours. i would recommend getting your trac lok and spider gears inspected while in there, the clutches may need to be replaced.

3.55 gears are excellent choice for a 5 spd, 3.73 for auto

Good Luck

Getting 3.55s installed in mine tomorrow morning. $200 to for the install of the gears and a new inner pinion bearing and race. If you have the money (which I don't at the moment), might as well change out all the bearings (including axle bearings) and rebuild the trac-lok. Good luck.
