Default Heater cores suck

when they blow.

Ive been calling around for a repair cost and the lowest Ive gotten was $462. Its a $20 part but the labor is high because it takes so long to change.

I took it to one place that told me $137 but he called me this morning and said he must have screwed up reading the labor book because theres no way he couldve done it that cheap. He somehow read that it took .8 hours when it really takes over 6. He couldnt do it today and said it would cost over $600 to change.

I normally do alot of work on my cars myself but I know the dash has to come off and a bunch of other parts from helping my cousin replace the heater core on his '89 GT several years ago. I dont have the time or place to change the heater core myself. Id rather have somebody else do it.

Id much rather spend the $500 or so on going faster but its getting colder now and I need the heater (mainly the defroster) and right now it blows coolant all over the windshield and the floor.

That sucks man... you should just take a day and dedicate it to the heatercore... than take that $500 bucks and put it into your motor/suspension.

You want to talk about a pain in the ***?!? I did a heatercore on a 200X something Jeep about two months ago... WOW WAS THAT THING OVERENGINEERED TO THE FULLEST! It took my friend 5 days to do it but that was only working a few hours a day but still, thats a long *** time!

And dont worry about a place to do it... all you really need is a place to put the nuts/screws/bolts and your set. I pulled a motor in a parking lot before in the middle of winter when it was almost a foot of snow! LoL

Yeah, Ive done it before and I wont do it again though. Id really rather put the $500 towards a set of heads or something else though.

Rotterdam is just outside of Albany.

i say spend the 80 bucks on the ford replacement heater core from the dealer and do it yourself. i did mine (first time) in under 4 hours. with a few brake in between.

here's the site i used with the best instructions i've seen http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/5652/

Thanks.
Honestly thats alot more involved than Id like to get. Im not too good with repairs that are that involved. I do alot of my own repairs but can tell when Im in over my head.

I paid $330 tp have mine done a couple years ago. You could always just bypass it. THat's what I did for 2 years.

I know I can bypass it but Id rather have the heat working since I plan on driving it occasionally until it snows.

I dont know if my car having AC makes it more expensive or something but the cheapest Ive found to install one is $462+ tax.
Ill probably drop it off tonight.

I bought my car from the local Ford dealer's parts/service manager, so he hooks me up.
