I accidently removed the timing chain gear during inspection and need to realign the cam and crank, so Im assuming you just but number one cylinder at TDC , crank key 1200 o clock, cam key and hole 6 o clock and chain back on?

you see the cylinders, nice wear cross pattern still there

crank shiny and smooth

crank berings shiny and smooth

pistons look like 20k old

timing chain and shortblock look young.

the lifters and gallers are filthy and cruded somewhat, but oven cleaner took care of that, and im takeing aprt the lifters ONE BY ONE and cleaning them by hand with brake cleaner.

I decided to keep the overhaul kits and repalce everything anyway, because I know you can see a .10 + gaps with your naked eye. but I bet as a mechanic and all my ears, this car BURT OIL BAD, DUE TO NOT OIL CHANGING and BAD VALVE seals as the crud was like THICK JELLO near the valley.

I have acetone and ALOT of shop rags and am getting busy, these old headgaskets are kickin my but!

yes, both the valves should be closed. Does it not say 302W? I dont know the difference in mexican blocks, and american ones. Maybe the mexican one is better!!

Holy !@#$,
How is it that you walk into some random yard and find a Mexican 302 block in perfect running condition!

There are guys that spend months looking for something like this!

The Mexican blocks are much stonger than the standard 302. I believe the main webs were thicker, and the Mexican block did have a higher nickel content.
There should also be 2 useless looking ***** on the front end of the block, near the water pump holes, I think.

I'm not sure I can speak to you anymore. LOL

The cam timing should be pretty straight forward. You should see a dot on the cam gear, and a dot on the crank gear. Line the 2 dots up, and your set.

You may want to check out the cam though. If a performance guy owned the motor, it may have a decent cam in it. It would be nice to verify the firing order of the cam too.

Your one lucky dude. If this block is in good shape, it will be able to handle comparable power to a 351w block.
