RE: Man I hate this guy!!..
ok you can make 500hp engine for about $5-6,000
but its going to go about 1 mile with those stock trans and axles and clutch behind it.
What good is 500hp when it breaks everything behind it the first time you floor it?
$5,000 engine ... no problem i just built a 435+hp 357W (w/ fuel injection not carb like that T&L quote) for about $5,000 add a 100shot of nitrous and you're done.
but then you have to buy $1,600 trans, $300 clutch, $300 bellhousing, $300 dif, $300 axles, fuel pump, the list goes on and on
lets be realastic ok?

You can get very close for not too much money -- We had a 89 LX convertible with a stock block, a set of AFR 165s, Ed Curtis cam, Cobra intake, 70mm TB & an S-trim with the 14# pulley and made around 450-460 to the wheels through an AOD. I'll have to dig up the dyno sheet to get the exact number. What body style do you have? You're probably in a lighter car. That whole setup would probably run (new) like 5k... maybe a little more...head studs, gaskets, misc.
Our setup lasted for quite a while with a bunch of beatings on it...actually, it was all beatings, come to think of it

It really wouldnt be extremly hard to make your car faster. just figure it runs 0-60 around 4.5 (same as 2004 cobra) and 1/4 mile close to 12.5
There are a lot of cars here on this site that run close to those speeds or faster with just H/C/I or S/C with close to 10psi...All you'll need is traction once you get above 300rwhp and with some juice on the side just in case.

It doesn't cost too much (relatively speaking) to get 600 HP out of an old 302 / 347 / 351. You can get hi, it just won't be easy, LoL.
A 347 crate engine will run about $3,700. Toss a used procharger or vortech S/C on top of that for another $1,300. Then if you're bored and got some extra money spend an additional $500 on sone N2O... Okay, so I'm being a bit unrealistic and there are some necessary supporting mods. But even without the nitrous the 347 and S/C alone would put you well over 500 HP for $5,000. That's really not that expensive.

chp has long blocks for 3g's and then a supercharger will set u back another 2-3 AT LEAST and then miscellanious items fuel pump fpr a tune. and then there is still some of the bigger items heads, intake, cam that stuff aint cheap.

Like I said before.. if you're trying to buy all new and expensive parts, then no. But you can rather easily do it for $5,000 and not have any major problems. I've seen it done. And if someone would like to say that it's not possible, then I would say put your money where your mouth is. I am willing to bet a hefty chunk of change that I can take a stock mustang and get 500 HP out of it for $5,000 and actualyl make it so that it wont kill the tranny or anything. I'll even take videos and pics along the way, along with keeping detained records and receipts. So if someone is willing to take me up on a bet, I'll get it done.
You are all assuming that you have to buy brand new parts at retail price. You are all assuming that you have to pay someone to build it, tune it, dyno it, etc. But like I said. If someone wants to put their money where their mouth is, then I will build it for $5,000 or less then show videos of it running as well as a video of it on the dyno to prove the HP.

If that's the case you should check corral more often. Just in the past few days a guy has a complete Vortech for sale for $1,000. Another Vortech is selling for $1,650 shipped. A Paxton with under 1000 miules on it is selling for $1,200... I just found those by very briefly looking at what was for sale over the past 48 hours. There are deals up tehre all the time you just have to be patient and look.
