help on stroker
I have a stock 5.0 and i was wanting to rebuild it cause its got some miles on and im going to put it in my 88 mustang. I seen theres a 347 stroker kit. but i didnt want to bore the cylinders out any if i didnt have to. I kinda want to keep stock size pistons would i be able to get the 347 crank and put it in with stock sized pistons. Also are the rod lenght any differnt than the stock rods..Im kind not to familar with strokers. Is there any differnts in the pistons size besides bore size. Could somone give me a quick run down on how a stroker rotating assembly works. I understand most of it but could use a little more education..lol. Thanks for the help and sorry about the noob questions.

RE: help on stroker
If you keep the stock bore with a bigger crank and rods, you'd be doing a 331. 347's are with a 4.030 bore.
Rod length for the 347 is 5.400 (or 5.315 in some cases).
The rod lengths for both strokers are different than stock. The only difference between the 331 and 347 is the bore (4.000 is stock, 4.030 is thirty over with is for the 347)

RE: help on stroker
A 347 is 4.03" bore and 3.40" stroke, a 331 is 4.03" bore and 3.25" stroke. Don't order anything until you have the block checked to see if it needs to be bored. If it doesn't need it then don't bore it. All boring does is give you a true round surface in the cylinder. You can order stroker kits with standard bore pistons. The cubic inches will be 342 instead of 347 or 327 instead of 331. DSS is what I have and they were good to deal with and my engine builder said their products were good quality. A stroker crank differs from a stock crank because it moves the piston further in the bore. The stock stroke of a 302 is 3.00". So from top dead center to bottom dead center the piston moves 3", on a 331 it moves 3 1/4".

RE: help on stroker
i have to agree with r barn here, after having the block measured and machined, you could buy a new 351 block and use most of the same 302 parts, you'll need a new lower intake and oil pan amongst other odds and ends, but you'll have 100 rwhp and torque more than a 302 base, and if you stroke the 351 to 427 the gains are incomparable.... but yes a 331 stroker would haave the same bore with different rods and crank, dss and dart sell short blocks that come stroked with forged internals, i believe $1800 for a 331, but dont quote me on that... the website is dssracing.com

RE: help on stroker
Jaggeezz unfortunately, you are actually incorrect. What makes a 347 is a 3.4' stroke with a 4.03 bore. a 342 stroker is actually a 347 but with a stock bore, I should know =) plus with a 3.4" stroke u need to clearance the block, so the rods dont hit =(
