Default scanner/computer wont talk?

so i finally got the car running well enough to bring it to my school so i could check it out. I was planning on hooking up the scanner up to it and finding out what the problem is (check engine). so when i bring it there i hook it up to the scanner and the damn thing wouldn't communicate with it. i seriously tried for hours to get the thing to read and i got nothin. i went onto ALLDATA and SHOP KEY, the programs that we have there, and went through a very elaborate process of pining wires to find voltage drops and ohming them out. this proved to be useless becase the last step that it offered was to use the scanner to find the problem [:@]. so that led me to nowhere. i found out from my cousin and my father that it never read codes on a scanner, just didnt wanna communicate. i was curious if you guys knew of anything like this? im sorry if i cant respond immediately with more info cuz the internet is really shady tonite but its a '92 auto. i have a handful of things done to it, but i guess it didnt read any codes when it was bone stock. any info would be GREATLY appreciated. i just want this thing to run before winter!

will the scanner do obd I computers? most wont if they do 96+ obd II's.

second you dont need a scanner to read trouble codes on a mustang just get yourself a 12v test light

trouble codes list

I think that around the tiem they started to fadeout odbI and brught in obdII you might have aobd1 and II plugs . obdI is under the hood and the odbII is under the dash

Mine hooked right up to a snap-on scantool. You're using the port that's on the driver's side close to the firewall, by the hood hinge right?

the scanner is not OBDI compatable, it may not have the software to read OBDI , just OBD II! use the self tests in the stickies!
