RE: what should i do
Well if yo have not been in a rearend I do not suggest you start with your project car. You will spend 500.00 on a complete job if you do though so this takes half of the $$$.
So you have 500.00 left...........if you got decent tires?
I would go buy a timing gun $40.00 and time my car to 14 to 16 degrees (depending on how it acts on 91 octane)
After that.........subframes, K and N filter / CAI/ C and L 76 MM maf (more for future mods)
180* thermostat........10$
9MM spark wires...and a good A S S tune..............
your out of money

RE: what should i do
It depends which M3. If its a 2001+ then im afraid your out of luck. They have 333hp, and it takes more than 1k to beat them. If eats earlier than that, then its got 240hp, and then it is doable. Get 4.10 gears, bump timing (mines at 18*, but i only run 93), subframes, full exhaust. It depends on how handy you are if you will be able to do all this. Gears are about 200$ for Ford Rcing gears, which are definetly what you should get. However installation on them runs 200-300 normaly. subframes are cheap, full exhaust...depends. you can get flows catback for 230 and an O/R X pipe for 140, and headers for 220. If you do all the work yourself then you should have spent right around 1k. That will give you a good shot at the m3.
