if i eliminate my smog pump on my 85 gt will i get more horsepower?

Barely.

Some feel that removing the smog pump with the stock cats in place will shorten the life of the stock cats.
I'm not too sure on that, but it makes sense.

Not really, and if you have cats don't do it. They need air to get hot enough. They may carbon up with out it.
