Alright I have a carbed 306, E303 cam, gt 40 heads, big carb (need to get the numbers off of it). It has the standard electric fuel pump as far as I know. When the key is turned to "On" the fuel pump runs continuously. If you drive the car at low rpms around, it will eventually flood the engine with gas and die. What's going on?
You need a regualtor for the pump.
better yet, don't use the 'in tank' pump at all, gey a Holley Blue pump, it comes with a regulator and use that........
You have a carb that probably wants ~7psi and you're supplying it with a fuel pump that generally sends 6-8 times that to the motor. I think that could be a problem.

Check the pressure out of the regulator and also check the float adjustment. all you said was big carb, is it a Holley / Barry Grant design or and Edelcrap(worked over carter afb)?
