Tweecer RT for the win. Don't get a plug in chip, they can be a royal pain in the *** because if you ever need to reprogram anything on the chip you have to uninstall it, wait for it to be reprogramed and reinstall it. The Tweecer RT is like a chip, but it's also like a tuner. It's like a chip in that it plugs into the ecu directly, it's like a tuner in that it comes with 5 preset settings 1 being low performance or you don't want sombody to do something they're not suppossed to setting, 2 economy, 3 aggressive, 4 F/I, 5 off. And it goes even further by allowing you to plug it into your laptop via USB and modify each parameter allowing you to get real time data while maximizing performance.

The preset tunes on the TwEECer are not really setup when you get the chip. When I first started the car, it had an incorrect tune loaded to one of the settings. Needless to say the car did not run well.
I think the presets are somewhat random.
The Tweecer RT will set you back 550 IIRC, and a wideband can be found for another 200.
This may sound steep, but keep in mind that you will be able to change most any parameter, and do so repeatedly, at your leisure.
The off the shelf chips you are talking about are little more than timing changes, with a few limiters being removed.
You won't really see much improvement with one of these.
