sweet ride...if it is like the 84, and it looks the same...the factory dash was cut in order to put that cd player in...i had an 84 with a factory amp an tape player...the radio had the 2 large ***** and the dash was cut out with 2 holes for the ***** to go thru...when i had my cd player installed they had to cut my dash...as i am sure they did on yours....if it was me i would leave the a/m radio in there...
79-84's were like you describe. In 1985 they went to the DIN mount, which is the complete rectangular opening. Again, this dash shows no sign of being hacked, a factory radio will go right back in it - or in my case the Radio Delete Cover plate I ordered will cover the opening just fine If I can find an original to put back in it fine, if not I'm ok with that as well as I have no desire for a cheezy sounding radio in a vert anyway.
dont think so, I had to file my dash in order to fit a Standard CD player......

Well, not trying to keep an argument alive for sake of arguing but I pulled the JVC standard sleeve mount CD player out last night, and the dash opening is 100% original, right down to the slight beveling inward on all four sides. It was not filed in any fashion, and the standard sleeve mounting system fit right in with about 1/8" to spare top-bottom and perfectly snug left-right. So the factory stereo's in 85-86 were actually a tad larger, not smaller. The Radio Delete Plate fit right over the entire opening.

I have the pics at home that I can post up this evening if you still don't believe me [8D]

isn't that the radio that had to be take out of the back of the dash? Isn't that when they had common ground wiring systems in them? if that is the radio you need to put in from the back I would not even bother. I can remember putting one in when I first started installing. If you don't take the entire dash off, the install consisted of one person standing in the middle of the car(top down of course) and pulling up on the bottom part of the dash while the other guy tried to shoe horn it in..... Like I said, I helped with one and never wanted to do another........

No - that was the old two post mounted radios that go in from the back. These go in from the front, on a slide type system (kind of like a drawer system) and get set-screwed in somehow from behind as I recall. Not overly simple by any means but definitely easier than the 79-84 radios

If I end up finding an OEM radio for it, I'm not afraid of taking the dash out - done a couple times before on my 82 and 85. The problem is going to be all the behind the dash hardware that was taken out when they did the sleve mount [:@]

i hated finding out about the common ground thing in my 89

was like why doesnt this work when i knew i had the wires right.. ended up only needing to hook up 2/3 wires on the harness to make all the speakers work... sounded like crap so i ended up wiring them all myself. Sounds pretty sweet with just an Eclipse head unit and the 6 stock speakers. Even had 2 12's in trunk for awhile and sounded great(2 12 JL's and a 500/1 JL)

but this was no car to try to keep stock so i didnt car changing it all.

by the way that convertible looks great.. nice car/nice buy.
