personally, with 7k ide buy a used 4v cobra motor-$1500. forged pistons and rods-$1100. vortech t trim with aftercooler $5000. the motor itself will weigh alot less, and be more reliable. and oh yeah, youll run 10s all day long. just my opinion

My friends has an uncle that has an 89 mustang w/ a blown 347 that runs mid 9's. however $7,000 would not put a dent into machine work and engine componets, much less the over all cost of his car. You have to remember its more than a big engine that makes a drag car, i think you may want to revalutate you situation in accordance to not only the engine, but suspension, braceing in the unibody, drive train(9in diff. trans ect.). Also, if you did go with the 351, you will have to do major work inside the engine bay with mounts, the shocktowers, and all of the braceing up front, witch also leads to a need of much stronger and tougher suspention compontents in the front. My advice it to go with a 347 stroker, just wait until you have the funds to do the complete package.

A 351w doesnt need special mounts or shock tower brace or nothing like that, no more than a 5.0 would.. and a 351w with alum heads will weigh about the same as a stock 5.0 anyways.

Comparing a 351w to a 347 performance wise - the 351w will be a safer motor (reliability wise) and can rev higher. The block is a ton stronger. Building a 408 is not gonna cost more than just a few bucks more to build than a 302, they carry most all of the same parts - just a little more to spend on an oil pan, headers, and a few accessory brackets. Oh yea the lower intake as well if your gonna go fuelie.

But... you already have a 302 block, so way I figure it if your gonna run 10's your gonna need a power adder of some sort to make it there for 7k.

Yeah, the $7k was just for engine components, I have more for body, drivetrain, etc. I really would like to go w/ the 347 though, does anyone know how I could strengthen the block? Some sort of balancing or something perhaps? Or is my only option to buy an aftermarket block?

Either way you go engine wise you need to budget $$ for a lot of chassis work like subframe connectors, control arms, springs, struts, shocks, bigger rear axles with C-clip eliminator kits, a roll cage, 5 point racing safety harness, helmet, wheels and slicks, driveshaft safety loop, etc. in order to pass tech at just about any dragstrip. You probably need to consider larger front brakes also for safe stopping too.
I'm not trying to discourage you from building a 10 sec car, but you need to get familiar with the safety rules of the NHRA and IHRA if you expect to run your ride on the strip with that kind of timeslip. Beside that, without the chassis setup, all the power in the world is not going to do any good unless you can put it to the ground and maintain traction. Go out to the local strip and talk to some racers and you'll see what I mean about the investment in the car itself versus just the engine.

I don't think I'd waste the money on something like that.
Just get an aftermarket block and rest assured it shouldnt crack.

Ok. This is still going to be a car that I'll be driving around for a while, so I'm sure the rollcage, etc. will come but not for a month or two. I won't take it to the strip for a while (gotta get the engine broken in). Does anyone know which parts a 351 cant take from a 302?
