The 9" Ford rear is a lot stronger than the 8.8 and is used in lots of race cars, so there are many more gear ratios available for it compared to the 8.8 rear. The differential assembly is removable in the 9" so it can be set up completely outside the housing on a bench rather than doing it inside the rear end housing like the 8.8. There are also many more differential parts available for the 9" rear in all different kinds of materials for lighter weight and strength. These are just some of the differences between the two types. A well built 8.8 with 31 or 33 spline axles can handle up to 400 HP but if you're planning on more than that, I'd go with the 9".

The 8.8 when it's done right can handle quite a bit of power.
My friend and i built a big block car 87 gt and it was dynoed with 750hp.
never broke once.
Just make sure you put good axles and a Bearing girdle on it.
By the way,my car is making 420 rwhp and the rear end is 100% stock down to the limited slip save for a 3.73!
(I know it's on borrowed time if i dont beef it up though)

I agree with everything roundman said, save for the hp amount. Mustangs are light and 8.8's in them will hold up fine for most any hp amount. Don't get me wrong, if I was upgrading from a 7.5" I would likely jump right to a 9", but I certainly wouldn't swap out from an 8.8 for any reason other than looking for a particular gear ratio on a specialty car (like a circle track racer or 100% drag car).

there are two advantages to the 9" 1 strength 2 the third member comes out so you can change gaers in like 10 mins if you have more then one third member. 8.8 on shortcoming is the third member does not complete come out of the rearend, but is plenty strong.

I have heard that the 9 inch is the best of course but i also heard that it sucks up more HP also. Meaning that i didnt take as much HP to turn the 8.8. But remember im not sure this is fact or not.Worth checking out maybe. Also 9 inch cost more but probally last longer. Just my .02cents. Good luck
