iridium spark plugs
Hey guys right now I have bosch platinum x4 and I was wondering what anyone knows about NGK iridium plugs. I'm having a slight problem with my car sometimes cutting out on me while I'm driving and I've been hearing lately that bosch platinums aren't necessarily the best plugs. Is this true? Any advise you can give me would be appreciated, thanxs

RE: iridium spark plugs
dude... go ahead and spend $100 on iridium spark plugs for your car.... i swear, its worth every penny.
OR you could be intelligent about it and buy the $1.29 Autolite coppers and save a **** ton of money and get a superior plug. When you have a modified engine, they tend to eat plugs, so coppers arent too expencive to replace.
i'm never going platinum again

RE: iridium spark plugs
Blah any "special" plug is a waste of money. All it does is create a spark, just cause it has platinum in the name doesn't make them good. They don't make some "super special high voltage giant spark that will make your car go zoom". I just put accel plugs in my car, good quality standard plugs. I work in a shop, and know a lot about racing and am very good friends with the record holder in the pro-stock class in NHRA, all he runs, Accel plugs, same thing I do. Platinum plugs just last a little bit longer, but not worth it.

RE: iridium spark plugs
I'd recommend NGK plugs, but the Autolites are just fine. IMO the iridium plugs are better suited for higher boost '03/'04 Cobras, or highly modified 5.0s. If using iridium plugs, I again recommend NGK (over Denso).

If you have $10 to spare, go to the SAE site and order paper number 2006-01-0224, 'The Effect of Sparkplug Design on Initial Flame Kernel Development and Sparkplug Performance'
Basically, the multi point plugs are junk. The extra point get in the way of the flame kernel, and kills flame propagation. There are some pics of flame kernels in this paper that are VERY good.
Rare metal plugs aren't ideal for our cars due to their higher resistivities. The copper plugs are the best choice for Fox Mustangs. A higher resistance plug requires a higher power ignition system, which many of todays new cars have.
The best plug will have a very small electrode diameter, and the tip of the arm will be directly above the tip of the electrode.
These 2 features better allow flame propagation.
