hey guys i just had a quick question thats been buggin me for a while. i know new rear gears will help a lot with accelaration, but do they do anything for actual horsepower and torque numbers? if you ran on the dyno would it be more than stock?
Torque to the wheels in increased but hp is a formula that calculates not only how much torque is produced, but also how fast that torque works - which means gears wont affect the hp on a dyno since the extra torque produced is offset by how fast the wheels can get the rollers spinning - so its a wash - and actually to be technical about it, with gears the actual hp #'s will DECREASE slightly because this isnt a perfect world and friction will reduce the ability of the car to accelerate as fast as it would before the gears (it will get the rollers spinning quicker but will not be able to continue to accelerate them as fast).

Ok this is prolly confusing sounding I did it in a hurry, if its confusing I'll do better on it later.

rman is right on there....also lighten up rotating mass will have this effect..ie..lighter wheels/tires/pulleys/driveshaft/a-arms/rotors/hubs etc

Red, the gears will have some effect on the mileage but it all depends on how you drive also as to what the effect will be. When I changed from the 2.73's to 3.73's in my '88, the crusing rpm in overdrive at 70 mph went up from 2,000 rpm to 2,300 rpm and I didn't really see any big decrease in gas mileage at all. With lower gears, the car will get up to speed and in higher gears quicker and this can actually save some gas provided you aren't leaving every stop at WOT.
