Default interior question 86 GT

hey everyone i've been taking the interior of my car apart the last couple of days just for something to do and see what kinda damage there is under there.... well as i was looking in my trunk area i had a piece of wood and carpet cut out to fit in the area so i took that out to vaccum and check for rust and what not but what i noticed was there was this thin lining the same color as the paint on the inside looked like part of the car at first then i started vacuuming and noticed its like a layer of some fabric or something.... its cracking all over the place and some is even missing... what exactly is this stuff and what does it do, if i took it off to check for rust and stuff is it expensive to replace? thanks and i wish i had a digital camera so i could show people but i dont any help would be nice thanks

oh and one more question how do u take the console out to be able to pull the carpet up? lol

It's sound deadening, you could tear it out and save some weight, but you'd get more road noise.

Console has 2 screws under the ashtray, 2 bolts under the e-brake lever, then open the cubby under the armrest and remove the screws in there as well. I think thats all of it.

yah i dunno what this stuff is its fairly thin... not overly soft buts it's really glued on there with a think glue or something.... from about my back seat towards the fron its alright but from there back its in horrible shape coming out and stuff by the tire well.... i just wanted to know if it would be cheap to replace beacuse i wanna take it out and look for anymore rust.
