if you do that kind of stuff ALOT, then it would make sense that your 5.0 went to an early grave.
87-95 are just about completly the same. yes the heads are the same.
your front engine excesories will need to be swapped, and your upper intake manifold, the older 87 intakes have the throttle body position in a different angle.
heck, i would be looking for a 96+ explorer engine, they have pretty much a cobra engine, but with a less agressive camshaft. swap in a 5.0 ho cam or e-303 or just about any aftermarket cam and you will be making good power.
97.5 explorers switched to gt40p heads, you will have to have the egr holes drilled by a shop, thats about $100ish
