Stock cats are a restriction.

Aftermarket cats will not harm performance to any significant degree.

Ditch the 4 stock cats in favor of a high flow setup. Most aftermarket midpipes only have 2 cats. You only need 2 to pass sniffer tests.

Swapping the stock midpipe (with cats) for an aftermarket midpipe (without cats), does not imply that the cats are the problem.
It implies that the entire stock midpipe is a problem.
Removing any part of the stock pipes in favor of mandrel bent aftermarket parts will improve exhaust efficiency.

I bought my 87 2.3L LX without any cats.
When I installed a Magnaflow cat I noticed NO loss in power.
However, there is absolutely no way I would have ever passed the emissions sniffer without the cat.
