Cats make a huge difference?

Cats make a huge difference?
So last night I went down to this street strip where tons of nice cars always come in to race on...
Usually there are just lots of ricer hondas, but last night there was like 6 or 7 mustangs (3 fox bodies, 2 5.0 SN95s including mine, and an 02 GT)
While talking with the mustang guys, they said my cats are KILLING me and that if I took em off and put an Xpipe or something on the difference would be "night and day"
Why are the cats killing me? I thought they were good lol

just your stupid check engine light will come on.....look for a off-road h/x pipe...or high flow cat if you get smog checks?

RE: Cats make a huge difference?
An off road pipe won't cause a check engine light because there are no secondary o2 sensors. Secondary o2's weren't introduced until 1996 when obdII came out. Secondary o2's check the o2 levels after the cats to make sure they are working correctly. The o2 sensors on our car check the a/f mixture only to make sure the car runs stociometric (14.7:1 a/f ratio).
