what actually determines your redline?

RE: what actually determines your redline?
Your rpm is the number of revolutions that your engine completes in a minute. Unless you have a higly modified engine that can handle the added stress it is not safe to rev higher.

i know that, but what i was really wondering is what part of your engine limits. is it that your valves cannot open and close any faster without damaging them? or that your piston rings cannot slide any faster against the walls of the cylinder? or what?

RE: what actually determines your redline?
combination of ya cam and gears usually... a cam has a rpm range where it starts and lses power say 1800-5400 and then what gears ya have make a diffence too..butya cam has a huge part in it.

cam, rods, springs, lifters. There are many varibles that the factory takes into consideration when setting the limit. I do know that the jet chip I bought raises the redline a few hundred rpm but I still stay under the factory line.

RE: what actually determines your redline?
Mainly the weight of the valvetrain and the seat pressure of the valve springs. When your hitting high revs usually its the valvetrain that fails. A stock 302 bottom end could probably be taken to 9,000rpm...they actually spin them to 8,500 in Pure street in the NMRA, but they run extrememly light valvtrains, like Titanium valves, retrainers, keepers, high strength valve springs, lightweight pushrods, etc. All this is extremely exspensive. The reason they run them to 8K is because they are mandated for a 310ci or smaller engine, so revs are the only way for power for them. On the street this is extrememly un-reliable for a daily driver, stroking it and a set of heads would make the same power for almost less money and be much more reliable.

your valvetrain (springs) engine harmonics...fuel supply... cam duration/rampspeed...piston weight...this mostly determines your redline..... this is where the big three determines your computer rev limits...
