Pinging will sound almost like a light exhaust leak. A light tick, tick, tick. If you can hear it really good, then you have a big problem. If you're going to be running 14*, I would recommend premium gas. Also, make sure you pull out the spout connector (by the distributor) when you time it. Otherwise, it will throw off the reading. When you time it, time it to the top of the pointer. Some cars are goofy too. Some like more timing, and other don't like much above stock. With my cam, it likes up to 18*, but thats with a fairly radical cam. For a stock motor, it just depends on what the car likes.

yea i forgot the spout.. but remembered when i was rechecking it... so it was actually only at 12... its at 14 base timing now... i reved it a lil in the drive way and i didnt hear anything like that... i actually didnt hear anything outta the ordinary.. and taht was with the hood up and the door open and my head sticking out... so i would think i would be able to hear it and i heard nothing.. so i dunno lol... seems to be all good.. and at just 12* it seemed slitlly quicker... what would 14* do on a stock car as car as profermance number what kinda hp and tq gains... thanks a ton

generally, you're looking at 3 - 4 HP per degree of timing added.

cool.. so 12-15hp for damn near free... just a lil more on gas... and ar u sure i need 93octance... i dont have 91 in town i dont think... its 87 89 and 93... and 93 is actually quite a bit more than unleaded but the 89 is only a nickel or so more.. i dont think i head pinging.. again i dunno what it sounds like for sure... but i heard nothing i ahvent heard b4... thats for the hp info sam much appreciated... bumping up timing is a good deal.. i borrowed uncles timing light and got a distributor wrench for 5 bucks.. which i would have needed down the raod newayz so i dont even consider that cost to the project... considering ill use it how knos how many more times... so it is 12-15hp for like 50cents or a dollar mayb lol... its that rwhp or at the crank??
