i did the same thing to mine, but i was hooking up a sub also so this may not answer your question exactly.... but i needed a new wiring harness to hook up my headunit, so i went to circuit city and got the wiring harness and the guy said he'd go ahead and do something to my factory harness to bypass some of the other harnesses that i didnt even know i had... but after he did that, i took the harness i bought home and hooked it all up and it works really good now. hope this helps you!!

You need to take out the factory amp if it was not working before OR if it was working it is possible to take the remote turn on lead on your radio to the remote of the amp. IF it was not working then you will need to take out the amp and catch the wires after the amp cut them from the plug and run wires from your new radio to the wires you just cut.
