Default 400 yea or nay?

my grandad has a ford 400 engine he's about to get machine work done to and rebuilt. he says once he gets done, he might offer it to me to drop in my 94 stang. i know its a truck engine but hes figuring to torque figures to bein the 400s, and the horses in the low 300s. what do you guys think? should i swap out my mostly stock 302?

for me it wasn't worth the effort. Shoehorning a BB in a fox is not fun at all. Much easier to stroke out a 302/351. I had a good 352FE I was going to use in my 86 but changed my mind.

Here's a link to Toma's 460 stang www.tomak.net

is it a modified 400 like a 351 modified..if so i say yes..will have good hp and torq of a beast..and is different...my freind put a 429 in a stang wast all that hard, just a lil exp..had to buy swap kit and headers for it,and a few other things but his car is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!! and he says when som1 ask,its a BIG BLOCK//but traction issues are a concern..you will need better suspension...if sont matter and you like to boil it,i say go for it..GOOD LUCK

From what I have heard/understand they are heavy as ****! I would just stroke a 351W if it were me. But if your getting it for cheap than go for it I guess... but you will not have the same benefits as a 302/351W with the huge aftermarket, etc.

Your transmission will not bolt up to it and what are you going to do about accessory brackets? You are better off to mod the 302 or stroke a 351 Windsor. Stay with the Windsor family of engines it will be alot less headaches on doing anything to it.

^^ I didnt even think about those. The only way I would go with a big block like that is if I had unlimited time to do it where I could fab up brackets, etc. AND had tons of money to spend on them because it will not be easy/cheap converting everything over. It would be sick... but not really worth it IMO. Plus like I said they are heavy as hell.

you guy's don't keep up with engine masters do ya...just look it up.

there is no modified 400...just a plain old truck engine 400....yes they did use these in cars.....big cars...

as was pointed out the 400 is in the 335 engine block family(big blocks)...so yes the bell housing wont even come close to matching up....if want a bigger motor just stroke a 351 to a happy 408....
